Personally Shared Stories
These reviews are from affidavits and real personal stories shared with us, penned by previous teachers, students, and parents that have all left the school.
“As punishment, I had to stay late at school and wash dishes every day. I specifically remember having to cut the school’s grass as punishment and getting sick from heat exhaustion and dizziness”Previous ABC Student
“In 2017, while working as a teacher’s assistant in the “Upper Campus”, I began noticing that punishment was given to some students in the name of work ethic. In my witness, it was moreover a way for the “Upper Campus” teachers to be in control of a student. Some punishments included washing all the dishes by hand from lunch for all classrooms which would take a few hours to complete. My daughter and Kristen Hardin’s adopted daughter, Katelyn Hill, were made to complete the handwashing dishes tasks for several weeks and were often held over after school ended. Another punishment was cutting the grass with a rotary lawn mower. I saw several students being ostracized to the attic and made to stay there alone, with no assistance and no one near them. Some students were sent to the “computer lab” which was a room between the office and the back porch of the house, without consistent supervision. There was very little consistency, poor communication between administrators and with their staff, and students were given assignments and then the assignments were changed mid-way through. The students complained of this weekly, but nothing was ever done to set curriculum appropriately.”Previous ABC Teacher
“During meetings in the 2017/2018 school year, especially in the beginning of the year, we were told altogether as a staff to make positive reviews on behalf of the school, especially if we had children there but even if we did not. We were told to use different computers as the computers could be pinged and to go on to various review sites. This was explained to us that it was needed to help peak interests and boost enrollment as well as to balance out the negative reviews. “Previous ABC Teacher
“One day Carmen Hardin was sick and in the middle of the “Lower Campus” lunch area began to vomit; I brought her a trash can and asked an older student to get her dad, Chase Hardin. When he entered the room, he grabbed Carmen by the arm and without empathy told her to “Stop this!” in front of the whole class. This had to be ridiculing for her and her eyes were full of sadness. I responded in her defense that she is sick and needs to see a doctor. Kristen Hardin, Carmen’s step-mother, entered the room from the “Upper Campus” as she could see us through the window next door and told me, “She does this, pretends to be sick for attention”. They finally did take her to the doctor only to discover that she was actually sick.”Previous ABC Teacher
In fall of 2013, I was asked by Kimberly to be on call to either come and spank my son, or come and remove him from the school if he had loud outbursts of crying. Kimberly said he was disrupting the class by screaming out, and that it was not something they could have in a Montessori classroom. I was called to come and spank him at least four times.Previous ABC Parent
After hiring an unqualified parent to teach a creative writing class, my daughter and her peers were encouraged to split into groups and write chapters a story in May 2013. This teacher approved and helped them write a story with a plot in which one child killed another brutally with a knife over a girlfriend. The story was played down by administration and I had specific meetings with Larry and Kim about this topic, in which Larry responded with a letter and newspaper clippings of school shootings. This same teacher was using foul language consistently in the class with the children, and although it was reported to Kim and Larry, they did not address the situation but instead encouraged the children to accept a more “mature way of teaching”. After several letters and meetings with Kim and Larry, this teacher was removed in late 2013.Previous ABC Parent
I worked at ABC. I left for the day but came back because I left my wallet. Walked into my classroom to find an assistant teacher applying her whole body weight on a 4 year old pinning him down while holding his wrists. I removed the child and took him to the office & told Chase advising him to send the assistant home. He scoffed and laughed at me. And I urged him to tell the parents. He said he would investigate.Later I was told that there was no need to make a big deal out of it and they would not let me OR the teacher I worked with see what really happened to our student. They refused to inform the students parents and there was NO incident report filed. These people don’t care about anyone’s children.Previous ABC Teacher
“A Muslim family used to bring halal chicken for Chase to prepare for lunch since they were getting next to nothing to eat at a time when students couldn’t bring their own lunch into the school. He would offer the same chicken soup he gave to everyone else to them and thinking they wouldn’t know. One time, he ran out of cheese pizza for them and only had pepperoni. He lied to them and said he had another box of cheese pizza. I witnessed him go over to another classroom and pulled the pepperoni off and gave it the Muslim kids. The parents were told and the kids stopped eating lunch from the school. The parents insisted that the kids bring their own lunch after voicing their concerns – as ABC would not allow children to bring their own lunch from home.”Previous ABC Teacher
“when our kids were enrolled there, we were told they would be getting organic meals prepared by a trained chef on the premise. What we got instead…Sandwiches,Tacos,Pizza from a local delivery restaurant,Chinese food (lo mein noodles) from a restaurant…It was the SAME menu every week…. my kids were so tired of pizza and Chinese food that we couldn’t even have these as treats at our house.Last time I checked, those meals weren’t prepared by a chef on site and definitely were NOT organic.”Previous ABC Parent
“Most of the toddler lunches were made from a insta-pot provided by a parent and a crockpot and the teachers made the lunches hidden in a closet . They were told to make whatever with the food that was barely provided . When the state came they were told to make sure they hid them .”Previous ABC Parent
“The reason they would not allow personal lunches is because he got a grant for the number of students that he served and since the school was so small, every student had to be served to get the grant. I was told this by his wife. My daughter and many of the students I worked with there had food allergies or had specific cultural food specifications. I had to get a letter from my pediatrician to finally be able to bring my daughter’s lunch. The families of Muslim backgrounds who needed specifications were not allowed to either; paying top dollar for their kids to go to school there. Oh huh uhn. Nope. Some started bringing it anyways and we would let them sneak food when he was not there. One assistant/parent would bring her food and place it on her daughter’s tray for her to eat her Indian food. Oh and about the “organic grown at the school” food, no that was like a total misconception. They would grow food like once and be done with it as like a snack. The food came in bulk and he would prepare it or we as staff would put most of it together on plates while he worked on the hot food. Many times the salad and bread would be old. It was a nightmare every day with the lunches.”Previous ABC Teacher
Can we talk about how Chase would hide his E-Cigarette in his sleeve during morning carpool and take puffs between getting the kids out of the car????? Yep….. my three year old at the time asked why Mr. Chase had smoke coming out of his arm and mouth and asked if he was on fire! He’s a GREAT example of health for our kids!Previous ABC Parent
“We almost fell for this [brain training program]. She [Kim] was a good salesman but things just didn’t quite add up….. for instance, you pay them a ton of money and Kristen would be the one running the program. The entire speech/seminar we sat through was for kids who had disabilities. They kept asking us to financially partner with them to bring this to Henry County.
While working in the “Upper Campus” as assistant to Kristen and Amy, I was specifically overseeing the needs of seven students with either special needs, disabilities, or who were simply behind as far as their age range and grade were concerned. I would hear Kristen and Amy talk horribly about and make jokes about the students and their parents and then be professional in front of the parents when they were on campus.Previous ABC Teacher
The “Upper Campus” class was told by Kristen Hardin and Amy to yell at an autistic student, in effort to try to change his loud outbursts and “bubbly” behavior.Previous ABC Teacher
We were instructed by administration to remove the horse and goat from the playground first thing on Mondays and to have students scoop and remove the feces from the playground. Then we were made as “Upper Campus” teachers to come on weekends and feed the animals, without extra pay, and on Sundays, to put them back in their pin; then on Mondays, the students were to scoop out the feces. There is no way that all of the feces was able to be removed and therefore, students were running around and playing on it.Previous ABC Teacher
I witnessed Bright from the Start come to the school on numerous occasions, often without notice. The school seemed to have difficulty being ready for their visits and examinations; administration would often scurry around to quickly have things in order for their walk-throughs. I can recall one specific visit that was disturbing for me when I was told by Kristen to stop my lesson with the students and quickly go to the kitchen and sweep, especially underneath the metal rack where the boxes are kept. I did and what I swept up was mostly feces from what appeared to have come from large rats.Previous ABC Teacher
The swim “team” was nothing more than glorified swim lessons and a method to pacify parents with a means to have physical fitness for the “Upper Campus”. While it was a decent idea, it too got out of hand and was used as a form of manipulation against the students. When one of the older female students began her menstrual cycle and did not feel like swimming or that she could in that state, Kristen told her to “plug it up” as no one would be missing swim team.Previous ABC Teacher
When I was 11 or 12 years old, Kristen slapped me in the face and threw me up against a sink. She then pinned me against the sink with her forearm on my throat and verbally assaulted me.Previous ABC Student
